It can be very overwhelming as a new mum trying to sort through the overload of information that gets thrown at you.
Breastfeed, mixed feed, pump, express, bottle feed, use a dummy, don’t use a dummy, pat them to sleep, rock them to sleep, shush them to sleep – my brain felt like it was going to explode.
I’ve been sorting through the complete jumble of nursing bras, tops, creams and other ‘stuff’ that has piled up in my wardrobe. I thought I’d need it all on my breastfeeding journey…but some of it has never even been used or only used once.
But here are the five essential items that I found invaluable while breastfeeding!
I spent a lot of time hiking around my neighbourhood with the pram to try and get my little girl to sleep without tears and a mummy meltdown. Traditional sports bras just squashed my boobs and regular nursing bras just didn’t give me enough support.
Cadenshae nursing bras are designed to provide support while you exercise, and ease of access to promote breastfeeding for active mums. This is particularly brilliant if you are a larger busted woman as this design features padding on the 2cm wide straps for additional comfort.
This is the simplest and easiest breast pump to use and clean that I have seen. It doesn’t require any assembly! The one-piece food-grade silicone hand pump allows you to just put it in your handbag and go.
There’s no need for small parts, instruction manuals or electrical outlets. You simply place it over your breast to catch the excess milk from the opposite side while breastfeeding or pumping. Then pour the milk directly from the pump into your bottle or storage container. You can put it in the dishwasher, and boil or steam it to sterilise. Too easy!
I must admit that I am a nursing pillow convert. I wasn’t convinced that it was an essential item until about 4 months in when my daughter was feeding hourly and my back, neck and shoulders were so sore from being hunched over all the time.
I borrowed a nursing pillow from a friend and after a few days went and got my own. The pillow provides extra support for the baby and your arms and allows them to lie in a higher position. That means that you can sit back in a comfortable chair and minimise the strain on your muscles. Plus, you can balance lactation cookies on the other side of the pillow – bonus!
This is the Queen of breast pumps and an absolute must for working mums or mums that are expressing and bottle feeding regularly. It is an electric double pump mumma milking machine. I really struggled to express sufficient amounts of breastmilk until I tried this pump.
It has varying suction levels which you can gradually increase to mimic a suckling baby and adjust to your own preference. It’s quiet, easy to assemble and efficient which is prefect for those you are expressing in the workplace.
Hint: Prop the pump on your nursing pillow, lean back and relax – I used to listen to audiobooks!
One of the aspects of breastfeeding that often gets downplayed is that it can be quite painful initially. The second day after my daughter was born I had cracks in my nipples from the top to bottom and even showering was painful. A good latch and perseverance will often mean that this does get better but what do you do in the meantime?
One of the things I really liked about this cream is that you don’t need to clean your breasts before feeding your baby. The ingredients used by Weleda are natural and mostly organic (83%) meaning that it is safe for your baby. Start to prepare for breastfeeding by using this in the last 6-8 weeks of your pregnancy. Then allow your breast to dry after breastfeeding and then apply this cream to soothe and moisturise your nipples.
These are the five essential, can’t live without items that helped me on my breastfeeding adventure during the wonderful, sleep-deprived chaos that is motherhood!
