So many Mums and Dads shush their babies but have you ever wondered why it works so well when settling baby to sleep?
Baby shushing is recommended by leading US pediatrician, Dr Karp (author of the Happiest Baby on the Block) and his 5 S’s method to settle an upset baby. You should Google him!
He shows shushing in action many times over and will also talk about the 5 S’s when settling a baby SHUSHING, SWADDLING, SIDE, SWAYING and SUCKING. Some babies may need 1 or 2 of these techniques to settle and others may need all 5!
So why does shushing help when settling baby to sleep? Babies up until the age of 6 months can only do one thing at a time. When a baby cries, the shushing should be loud enough to catch baby’s attention. Volumes in utero can reach 95 dBs, which is similar to a loud vacuum cleaner so the shushing needs to be loud! The shushing catches baby’s attention and as baby can only do one thing at a time, the crying stops and baby engages with the loud rhythmic shushing.
The rhythmic shushing triggers baby’s calming reflex, which is something every baby is born with, and you will start to see the signs of sleepiness. At this stage, the volume of shushing can be turned down to match baby’s relaxed state. The difficulty with shushing is the ability to maintain the loudness and the length of time it may take to settle your little one, not to mention ‘dry mouth’ syndrome!
Baby Shusher Australia has that problem solved. The Baby Shusher is a portable device thatplays rhythmic shushing up to 95dBs, reminding baby of being inside mum, with loud sounds of blood flow and other in utero noises. The shushing breaks a crying spell and engages their natural calming reflex.
